When Esther St. Claire rejoins her sophomore year a semester late she expects a relatively quiet return. But odd things begin to happen even before she can get to campus; starting with a strange encounter with a new student that escalates to an attack on Westin Academy’s student body. An other worldly battle is going on and somehow Esther is the key.
The Long Story
When I first sat down to read Clock Work, I will admit that I was a bit skeptical. I spend enough hours of the day at the computer without adding pleasure reading into the time spent. I knew that this online series would have to be very good to keep me reading on screen.
I didn’t stop reading until I had to stop reading. My husband was feeling neglected.
Clock Work grabs you from the beginning (admittedly, as an online serial should) and has you asking questions. While there is a bit of confusion as to what is going on, it isn’t so much that you are put off from reading.
When I read the first episode, I thought Esther would be a character I would end up not liking. Small, quiet and bullied, she didn’t seem interested in standing up for herslef in the least. But as I continued to read, I found I wasn’t annoyed with her but, instead, looking forward to her coming into her own.
Speaking of characters, I also found that the characters are very strong. You know who you are meant to like and not meant to like – but Bassett doesn’t shove it in your face and there are still a few wildcards floating around to spice things up.
I particularly like what is in addition to the story: the gorgeous artwork and the interesting quotes. Both add another level to the reading experience that kept me in my seat in front of the screen.
The Short Story
This is the first time I have ever read an online series, and I think it’s a great introduction.
My only nitpick is that the episodes are once a month. Haha.
